Construction

« Back to Process

The construction steps for building a new organ will be different than those for renovation, restoration, or repair. Different types of projects use the facilities of Patrick J. Murphy & Associates in different ways, but most stations in our facility are touched by each project.

Our state of the art woodshop may be asked to build a completely new instrument from design plans, or to use their exceptional skills to replace a single piece of a 150-year-old organ. Both jobs take different skills, which you’ll find in our shop.

During construction, other stations are used: general organ construction and wiring, pipe washing, re-leathering, winding, and voicing. Then, in the final station, we erect the completed instrument to do final testing and make mechanical adjustments.

One note about projects that retain and use components of the existing organ: we generally transport these components from the client’s site when that stage of the project arrives.

While we are building or restoring your organ, we welcome visits from you and members of your committee or congregation—it is truly an inspiring sight to see these complex devices lovingly restored or built by our craftsmen.
