Opus 47R

Johnson City, Tennesee St. John's Episcopal – Johnson City, Tennessee

Opus 47, a major revamp of M. P. Möller Opus 7435, originally constructed in 1946 for the First Presbyterian Church of Reading, Pennsylvania, has a rich history. Initially a three-manual, 22-stop instrument, it underwent significant changes in 1965, expanding to 25 stops. In 2004, Patrick J. Murphy & Associates conducted a comprehensive overhaul, resulting in Opus 47. This transformation included new electric slider windchests, updated winding, additional foundational flues and reeds, and extensive revoicing.

In 2018, following the congregation’s relocation, Patrick J. Murphy & Associates purchased, removed, and stored Opus 47 at their own expense until a suitable new owner emerged. In 2021, Nick Andrews from Saint John’s Episcopal Church, Johnson City, Tennessee, expressed interest in acquiring the organ.

Now known as Opus 47R in its new home, the organ incorporates the 2004 updates, featuring new slider windchests, console, and pipework additions. The design retains most pipes from Möller Opus 7435R, regulating all pipework to suit the new space. The revised interior layout rests on new chassis and a fresh winding system, including two-inch-thick expression enclosures and shades. The newly crafted case, designed to complement the building’s architecture, showcases façade pipes from 2004 and former interior Möller 16′ Diapason pipes.
